Fine wine

Somebody once told Bill Terlato, If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.”
The president and CEO of Terlato Wine Group Ltd. still remembers that advice, which is one of the reasons why he finds creating a vision so important.
“If you want to lead, you have to determine where you’re going to go,” says the leader of the company, which is the $250 million parent company of several independent businesses specializing in the marketing and production of wines. While you need your senior team to be involved with tactical and some strategic actions, you need to be the point person when it comes to vision. “It’s very hard to have multiple people setting the vision,” he says. “I compare it to driving a car. It usually works best when one guy has got his hands on the wheel.” Smart Business spoke with Terlato about how to get where you want to go.
Stay focused on the goal. We are just reminding ourselves constantly. If you know exactly where you want to get to, it seems like the road kind of just unfolds. The best way I wine tours sonoma valley can describe it – this is something I observed when I was young – in school, they do these aptitude tests. They give you these little mazes, and you are supposed to start at one end and work your way back to another. I was finishing these things a lot faster than everyone else in the class, and they didn’t understand how that was happening. They gave me one and watched how I did it. The way I did it was, instead of starting at the beginning, I started at the end and worked my way back to the beginning. I think it was just the way our mind works – start where you want to be and work your way back. All of a sudden, the road of how to get there will unfold before you.
Communicate and explain your passion. I have three children, 23, 20 and 17 years old. The first thing we always tell them is, ‘You should do what you love,’ because sometimes work can be tough, and it’s not always the most rewarding
Russell’s got game
Sun ,27/09/2009DSN Retailing Today, Jan 10, 2005
In a span of just two years, Russell Corp. has transformed itself from a supplier of basic apparel items to a full-service sporting goods company that offers retailers an expanding slate of well-known apparel, equipment and footwear brands.
The most recent example is Russell’s mid-December acquisition of Brooks Sports, a $95 million company best known for its running shoes. Just seven months earlier in June 2004, Russell acquired American Athletic, a $20 million supplier of basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and cheerleading equipment sold primarily through team dealers and a direct sales force.
Then in July 2004, Russell acquired the assets of Huffy Sports, giving it the leading basketball equipment brand and official backboard of the National Basketball Association. In addition, Russell in 2003 acquired the Bike Athletic brand as well as Spalding, maker of the official NBA basketball.
Russell is now the largest equipment company in the basketball category and recently signed an eight-year, $125 million marketing partnership with the NBA.
Press – Commentary: Notaries, different yet equal?
Sun ,27/09/2009Daily Record and the Kansas City Daily News-Press, Feb 1, 2006 by Christine Ann Hughes
Recently one of the secretaries where I work asked me, How do you become a Notary? I told her to go to the Missouri Secretary of State’s website (www.sos.mo.gov) and search for notary. She did that and was able to find all the information she was seeking. The State of Missouri requires that a candidate for Notary Public must fill out an application, be at least 18 years of age, be a registered voter in the county for which commission is requested, be able to read and write the English language, have completed a state- approved notary training and obtained a certificate of completion, take a Notarial oath, pay applicable fees and post a $10,000 bond. The term of a Notary Public in the State of Missouri is four years.
Notary Publics have a long history going back as far as Ancient Rome. Scribes were called Tabellions and the tables covered with wax they used instead of paper were called Tabulae. They worked in the Roman market places. As they evolved, Notaries were used by the Roman Senate and the Courts of Law to record judgments and decrees. They also recorded private acts such as deeds, wills and transfer of property.
The term Notarius originated around 100 AD and is a Latin word meaning clerk. Cicero’s secretary, M. Tulluis Tiro, is believed to have developed a new form of shorthand called Notae Teroninae. During the 13th Century Notaries were Papal appointees given ecclesiastical jurisdiction. Although originally applied to the shorthand writer, over time the term Notarius became reserved exclusively to the Registrars attached to the Courts of Provincial governors, to the secretaries of emperors, and to the highest class of officials in the Roman Privy Council and the Imperial Chancery. The Notary, A short History, Tom Halliwell, May 2000.
Under the imprimatur of the church, the Notary was an official whose acts and records were revered and acknowledged internationally. Lost in Translation: Texas Notary Public v. Mexico Notario Publico by Jonathan A. Pikoff and Charles J. Crimmins. Notaries were used to record the questioning of martyrs and the events to follow even to the details of their passion.
England, a region geographically distant from the Roman seat of power, embraced a unique system based on customary law rather than Roman law. Today there are two kinds of Notaries in England, Scrivener Notaries and general Notaries. Scrivener Notaries generally have particular language skills and knowledge of foreign laws and practice mainly in London whereas general Notaries assist members of the public.
It is important to note that Notaries have different powers in the international community

Hunch service an online tool for making up minds
Sat ,19/09/2009AFP, June, 2009
SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) â New online service Hunch wants to help people make up their minds about anything from dumping a boyfriend to choosing a car or getting a piercing.
Launched in March by Flickr co-founder Caterina Flake and a team of Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduates, Hunch.com uses machine learning to guide people to decisions that seem to suit them.
“It’s a cruel world out there,” the New York City-based Hunch team said in a message viewable at the website on Thursday.
“Coin-flipping, I Ching consultation, closing your eyes and jumping, postponing the inevitable, Rock-Paper-Scissors, and asking your sister are all time-honored means of coming to a decision — and yet we think there’s room for one more: Hunch.”
