Harman denies crash allegations

0 Comments | Western Daily Press, Oct 5, 2009

Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman was facing a police investigation last night after she was involved in a traffic collision while allegedly using her mobile phone.

The crash happened in Dulwich, south east London, on the afternoon of July 3. Witnesses told the Mail on Sunday that the MP for Camberwell and Peckham stopped briefly to speak after the crash but drove off without leaving her insurance or registration details.

She is said to have struck a parked car, ending a mobile phone conversation.

Ms Harman, who is Leader of the House of Commons, denies any wrongdoing, her spokeswoman said.

Police are expected to take a statement from the MP but would not say if they had spoken to her or confirm any other details relating to the incident.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We are investigating a minor traffic collision in Dulwich on July 3 and are in the process of taking statements from all parties concerned.”

A spokeswoman for Ms Harman said: “(She) strongly refutes the allegations but is co-operating fully with the police.”

German-Turkish director boycotts Swiss over minarets

0 Comments | AFP, December, 2009

BERLIN (AFP) Prominent Turkish-German director Fatih Akin said Thursday he would not bring his new film to Switzerland in protest against a referendum vote that banned the construction of minarets in the country.

“This referendum conflicts with my understanding of humanism, tolerance and the belief that harmonious co-existence of peoples of differing backgrounds, races and religions must be possible,” Akin said in an open letter.

“As a child of Muslim parents who do not see minarets as symbols of political Islam but rather simply the complete architecture of their houses of worship, I feel personally affected by the referendum. That is why I refuse to travel to Switzerland.”

Akin was to have presented on December 16 in Zurich his new comedy “Soul Kitchen”, which…

NanoPacific Holdings, Inc. Announces Exclusive License from the University of California at Los Angeles for Supramolecular Nanoparticles for Molecular Diagnostics and Therapeutics

Business Wire, Dec 09, 2009

LOS ANGELES — NanoPacific Holdings, Inc. (NPH) announces the acquisition of an
exclusive license from University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA)
for a suite of supramolecular nanoparticle technologies. Under the terms
of the agreement between NPH and UCLA, NPH will have an exclusive
worldwide license of a system composed of a ternary mixture of modular
components that self-assemble into supramolecular nanoparticles. The
technology enables the synthesis of new-generation nanoparticles with a
high degree of size and morphological control, as well as tunable
surface charge and chemistry. These properties enable the production of
biodegradable nanoparticles that display improved physiological
stability, longer blood retention times, low acute toxicity and low
immunogenicity. The tunable surface properties allow several types of
functionality to be easily incorporated for imaging (optical, magnetic
and nuclear), targeting and controlled delivery of cargo. This is
synergistic with NPHs materials science platform.

We are pleased to have licensed this technology. This further
illustrates our ability and commitment to selectively add important
technologies to our platform. This technology, developed by Dr. Tseng
along with several other collaborators at UCLA has profound implications
for drug delivery, gene transfection centering on siRNA, and companion
diagnostics, stated Joseph A. Boystak, Chairman & Co-CEO.

This technology should facilitate our ability to collaborate with a
variety of corporate partners, research institutions and other academic
researchers, said Michael Flesch, Vice Chairman & Co-CEO.

I am pleased that my interaction and involvement with NPH will
accelerate the development of the supramolecular nanoparticle systems
toward applications in biology and medicine, said Dr. Tseng, Associate
Professor, Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at UCLA.

About the University of California at Los Angeles – UCLA
is Californias largest university, with an enrollment of nearly 37,000
undergraduate and graduate students. The UCLA College of Letters and
